Hope on the Horizon? Confronting The Driver Shortage

Quiet Highways? The sound of engines roaring down the highway has undoubtedly become quieter the past couple years. But, if you look at the data, you can see the industry is revving its engine! After years of facing shortages and feeling the strain on supply chains, it looks like the transportation industry is back on track. As the shortage of truck drivers decreases and more pros hit the road, the demand for freight has taken a long-overdue sigh of relief. Could 2023 be the year we see the roads bustling with life again? Workforce Constraints Remain a Concern Although the shortage of truck drivers across the country appeared to ease slightly last year, it’s still a major worry for the transportation industry in 2023. This was emphasized by a group of top industry experts at the recent Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association (IFCA) annual convention. According to Kirby Wagner of GROWMARK, the workforce shortage is the number one problem the transportation sector is facing right now. Existing shortages have exasperated issues and has resulted in a lot of retirements and many drivers feeling overworked. The American Trucking Associations (ATA) estimates that in 2022, the US was in need of around 78,000 drivers. While still a large amount, this is a noticeable drop from the shortage of 80,000 back in 2021. Regardless of the shortage showing slight signs of letting up, the shortage continues to be a cause for concern and definitely stands as something that everyone should be paying attention to. Expanding the Pool of Drivers The most significant challenge for the industry right now is in expanding the pool of drivers and employees. GROWMARK, a leading wholesaler within the agricultural industry, is actively working towards resolving this issue by providing training and assistance to new truck drivers to help them navigate the complex regulatory landscape. In addition, the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association (IFCA) is exploring new ways to increase the number of drivers in the agriculture industry by proposing an extension of restricted Class B licenses. Struggles Across Transport The trucking industry isn’t the only one feeling the squeeze when it comes to a shortage of workers. The railroad industry is also in the same boat, as BNSF Railway’s representative, Peter Skosey, recently shared. The company is facing a stressed workforce, leading to efficiency concerns in recent times. But BNSF didn’t sit idly by, they took action by negotiating a tough but rewarding round of labor talks, resulting in a whopping 24% pay raise for their hardworking employees. While BNSF may not offer paid sick leave, they make up for it by offering time off, with the average worker receiving a generous 27 to 33 days off each year. And if an employee needs even more time off, they have the option of long-term sick leave. These efforts demonstrate the determination of the transportation industry to overcome the workforce shortages and ensure their employees are well taken care of. The positive changes made by BNSF serve as a shining example for what things are bound to follow as the industry is urged to correct these longstanding issues. Investing in Infrastructure At BNSF, they’re not just talking the talk, they’re walking the walk – with over $3 billion invested annually in maintaining their network, they’re determined to reduce service disruptions and keep things running smoothly. Peter Skosey, a representative from BNSF, notes the company’s focus on efficiency and the luxury of investing in infrastructure to make it happen. As for the transportation sector as a whole, while the shortage of truck drivers has improved, it’s still a pressing issue. Companies are stepping up their game with training programs, regulatory support, and even expanded licenses to bring in more drivers. And the railroad industry? They’re in the same boat, with a stretched workforce, but are showing their determination with investments in technology and infrastructure to boost efficiency. Will SHIP IT Revitalize Trucking? Better Truck Parking, Tax Credits

The Ship It Act is a proposed bill that can have a fundamental impact across the trucking industry. The Future of Trucking Rev up your engines truckers, a game-changing piece of legislation is rolling into the House of Representatives! The Safer Highways and Increased Performance for Interstate Trucking (SHIP IT) Act is set to take the nation’s trucking industry to new heights with nearly $800 million in funding for essential upgrades. Co-sponsored by Reps. Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) and Jim Costa (D-Calif.), this bill promises to tackle one of truckers’ biggest headaches – finding a safe and secure place to park. Get ready for expanded truck parking access across the country and a much needed boost for the trucking industry. Put Up A Parking Lot The implementation of the SHIP IT Act makes funding for trucking projects, such as paving and parking, more accessible. The significance of parking is often underestimated outside the industry. With a shortage of 1 parking spot per every 11 semis in the US, drivers are forced to work unfavorable hours, causing longer delivery times. This can greatly impact commercial drivers and have a ripple effect on daily life. The funding will also enhance rest stops with better and safer restrooms, addressing the issue of gender-related safety concerns and encouraging diversity in the truck driving profession. Widespread Benefits Across the board industry leaders have been backing and showing support for the bill. The parking made available to our nation’s transportation experts has been an issue for a long time. According to Rep. Johnson, a member of the transportation panel, there are several economic benefits associated with a vibrant supply chain. “The SHIP IT Act will bridge gaps, keep costs down for consumers, and make it easier for shippers to move products across the U.S,” Johnson said. This bill would provide tax incentives, streamline the commercial driver’s license process, and provide economic benefits for individuals planning to join the trucking workforce. A Difference in Opinion Although many are in agreement that the trucking industry needs an upgrade, some argue that the SHIP IT Act falls short in addressing the root causes of the driver retention problem. Lewie Pugh, Executive Vice President of OOIDA, states that the bill fails to provide adequate compensation for truckers and does not address the lack of respect for truckers’ time from carriers and shippers. Pugh looks forward to working with Reps. Johnson and Costa to create policies that truly benefit truckers and improve the overall supply chain. Other Impacts The SHIP IT Act promises to revolutionize the trucking industry by providing a range of incentives for truck drivers. Not only will the bill streamline the CDL process to make testing and licensing easier, it will also make the industry more accessible than ever. Existing truck drivers with at least 1,900 hours on the road in a year can enjoy tax credits worth up to $7,500, based on their income, and new truckers can be eligible for a $10,000 tax credit. In times of crisis, states will have the ability to issue special permits for overweight vehicles and loads. The SHIP IT Act is a comprehensive solution to the trucking industry’s challenges and will provide a boost to truck drivers and businesses alike. Endorsement from Stakeholders The proposed legislation has received widespread support from the trucking industry. Sean Joyce, the executive director of the Shippers Coalition, declared: ‘Our supply chain is at a breaking point, and the introduction of the SHIP IT Act is a critical step in building a stronger transportation network.’ Chris Jahn, President and CEO of American Chemistry Council, added: ‘This bill removes numerous regulatory barriers that will make it easier for truckers to do their job — delivering critical products across the country.” Conclusion The act truly represents a pivotal moment for the trucking industry, offering vital funding for parking projects, incentivizing truck drivers, and enhancing access to crucial parking and rest areas. This transformative legislation has received widespread endorsement from key stakeholders, and is poised to fortify the nation’s supply chain and boost the U.S. economy. Not Just Girls: Lowering Your Risk of Breast Cancer

Ghosts, Goblins, Ghouls… It’s officially the spookiest day of the year! What if I told you there’s something much scarier lurking out there? This month brings something truly scary out of the shadows and into the spotlight: Breast Cancer. We’re taking this opportunity to teach drivers to learn the ways that you can lower your cancer risk. Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women during their lifetimes and has become a growing issue among truck drivers. Before all the men stop reading and scroll… to some other post thinking breast cancer only concerns women… think again.  On average, 1 out of 100 breast cancer diagnosis in the United States are male. To put that in perspective, in 2022 alone there have been about 288,000 cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed in women, that means nearly 3000 men will be diagnosed as well. How can that be? Breast cancer starts in the breast. This leads most people to assume only women can be diagnosed. However, if the cancer cells spread outside of the breast, they are most likely to enter the lymph nodes in the arm pit. Men have a lymphatic system, too? That’s right. Your body has a network of lymph nodes in your chest that filter out waste and bacteria. And if you have breast cancer, these lymph nodes can be affected by the tumor in your breast, which can lead to swelling or enlargement of the lymph node—a symptom called lymphedema. This can cause pain or swelling in the arm where the swollen lymph node is located. Everyone knows the importance of being aware and early detection. But what are the signs that your breast health is at risk? The most common sign of breast cancer is a new lump in the breast or underarm (armpit). Other signs include thickening or swelling of part of the breast, irritation or dimpling in the skin of your breast, redness or flaky skin in your nipple area, pulling in of your nipple or pain in your nipple area, nipple discharge other than breast milk (including blood), any change in the size or shape of your breast, and pain anywhere on your breast. If you notice any of these symptoms, you should see a doctor immediately! What Can I Do? Take care of your body. It may seem obvious, but majority of disease and illness can be helped, if not completely avoided by simply taking care of your body. This may be more difficult being in this line of work, but it doesn’t change that it’s absolutely vital. Stay Hydrated Don’t forget to hydrate. Your lymphatic system and circulatory system rely heavily on fluids. When on the road it’s way too easy to neglect water, relying on coffee and soda to get through the day. According to Mayo Clinic, on average, females need about 2.7 liters of fluid a day while men should be drinking 3.7 liters. For extra nutritional benefits, try adding just a pinch of Celtic sea salt for a boost in essential minerals. Don’t worry, it doesn’t taste salty! Exercise Daily It probably feels like you don’t have time to exercise, this doesn’t change the fact that it’s the most critical step in taking care of yourself. This even means preventing breast cancer! That’s right: a little bit of movement every day can go a long way in protecting your health. Hope Zara, the CEO of Mother Trucker Yoga, has created a list of quick and easy exercises optimized for truckers that will allow you to have the best foot forward when it comes to taking care of and improve your breast and chest health: Arm circles help create flow and circulation in your upper body. This little exercise will reduce lymph fluid buildup that shows up when you move around less than you should. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and stretch your arms out at shoulder height. Move your arms in forward circles, starting small and gradually making bigger circles. Reverse the direction every 10 seconds. Cherry picking: put your arms up, overhead. It also helps improving circulation and cardiovascular health and reduces lymph blockage. While standing, raise your arm and reach for the sky. It’s okay if you lean a bit and be sure to repeat it with the other arm. Downward Dog: strengthens the entire body and improves the immune system. Bridge pose: creates an “opening” in the chest and deepen breathing and circulation. This pose is perfect for drivers because they spend so much time sitting. If you ever find yourself hunched forward behind the wheel, closing off the chest. What’s cool about this is that It’s easy to do in the sleeper berth! Neck and chest massage: break up tension and allow blood and lymph to flow more easily through the chest. You can use your fingers or a massage ball around your clavicle, neck and shoulders in the morning and again at night. Truck step pull back stretch: An all-body stretch that focuses on releasing the shoulders, underarm area and lower back. All you’ve got to do is grab the truck step, bench or bar and sit back. Breathe deep and relax your arms to get a super deep stretch. Walking is a great way to keep your lymphatic system in optimum condition. A steady lack of movement poorly impacts the lymphatic system. Try walking in place, add an extra lap about your truck or walk a lap around the parking lot — it all adds up. This list may seem long, but start small, follow your body and slowly work them into whatever routine works for your unique life and schedule. Make sure to check out the rest of her article here. Maintain A Healthy Diet Your lymphatic system works best if you maintain a healthy weight. The true root of any healthy weight is diet and exercise, together, they help you keep your weight down. Obesity has been directly linked to over 12 different types of cancers so the…
